The Pakistan Railways Academy, originally founded in 1925 as a small training school under the North Western Railway in Lyallpur (now Faisalabad), later moved to a dedicated campus in Walton, Lahore. Named after Col. C.E. Walton, this academy quickly became a landmark in Lahore's Walton area. Over the decades, it has grown into a prestigious institution known for excellence in railway training, recognized internationally for providing advanced instruction in railway operations and signaling.
In 1954, the academy's facilities were selected by the United Nations Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE) to serve as a Regional Railway Training Centre for officers across Asia. Since then, it has trained thousands of railway staff, supervisors, and officers. The academy underwent several name changes before becoming officially known as Pakistan Railways Academy in 2000.

To develop the human resources of Pakistan Railways to international standards, producing the best-trained personnel in all disciplines.
The academy is led by a Director General, assisted by Joint Directors overseeing departments such as Civil, Mechanical, Signaling, Electrical/Electronics, and Traffic. Each Joint Director is supported by Assistant Directors and instructors, primarily drawn from experienced railway staff.
Conduct pre-service training for new officers and staff, including probationary specialized programs across Traffic, Commercial, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Signals, Telecom, Stores, and Purchase departments.
Provide promotion and refresher courses for officers and staff, including management boot camps (MCMC, NMC, SMC).
Organize seminars and workshops to refresh skills and share knowledge across all disciplines of Pakistan Railways.
Offer training to senior railway officers from Asia and Far East countries through UN programs under PTAP, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
The academy offers 35 modern classrooms, specialized model rooms for practical training, networked computer labs, and a comprehensive library with books, periodicals, and journals. Trainees also have access to seven hostels accommodating over 510 students, including international trainees, with air-conditioned rooms and free mess facilities.
A resident medical officer and dispensary provide emergency healthcare. Sports and recreational facilities include football, hockey, cricket, badminton, and indoor activities.
Annually, the academy conducts dozens of pre-service, promotion, and refresher courses, training thousands of participants from Pakistan and abroad. Training combines classroom instruction with hands-on exposure to real railway operations, including simulators, CBI consoles, and study tours across the network.
Pakistan Railways Academy is ISO 9001:2008 certified, ensuring international standards for training quality. Certification covers railway operation, management courses for officers, international participants, and industrial training for local customers.
Plans include establishing a dedicated Research & Development wing, upgrading infrastructure, collaborating with academic institutions under the Triple Helix Model, and linking with the National School of Public Policy (NSPP) for advanced management training.
پاکستان ریلوے اکیڈمی کی بنیاد 1925 میں شمال مغربی ریلوے کے تحت ایک چھوٹے تربیتی اسکول کے طور پر لیالپور (موجودہ فیصل آباد) میں رکھی گئی تھی، جو بعد میں لاہور کے والٹن میں موجودہ کیمپس منتقل ہو گئی۔ یہ اکیڈمی کولونل سی۔ای۔ والٹن کے نام سے موسوم ہے۔ والٹن اکیڈمی جلد ہی لاہور کے علاقے والٹن کی شناخت بن گئی اور بین الاقوامی معیار کی ریلوے تربیت کے لیے مشہور ہو گئی۔
1954 میں اقوام متحدہ کی اقتصادی کمیشن برائے ایشیا اور دورِ مشرق نے اس اکیڈمی کو ریجنل ریلوے ٹریننگ سینٹر کے طور پر منتخب کیا تاکہ ایشیا کے افسران کو جدید تربیت دی جا سکے۔ تب سے اب تک ہزاروں افسران اور اسٹاف تربیت حاصل کر چکے ہیں۔ 2000 میں اس کا موجودہ نام پاکستان ریلوے اکیڈمی رکھا گیا۔
